We get the same question every week: 'I have one day in Puerto Vallarta — what should I do?' Here's the schedule we'd run for our own family.
The premise
Ship docks at 8am. All-aboard 4:30pm. You want adventure, food, and at least one beer with your feet in the sand — without sprinting like maniacs or paying ship-desk prices. Here's the play.
7:00am — Eat on the ship
Trust us. The terminal has nothing good and you don't want to waste 45 precious minutes hunting breakfast. Carb up on the buffet and bring a banana for later.
8:15am — Off the ship, into the day
The terminal walk takes ~10 minutes. Skip the souvenir vendors at the gate — every shop on the Malecón has the same stuff for half the price. Look for your driver/guide outside the cordoned area.
If you booked with us, look for a coral-orange flag. We meet you 7:45–8:30am depending on ship and traffic.
9:00am – 1:00pm — Pick ONE adventure
You can't do two. The math doesn't work. Pick one, do it well:
- ATV / Jungle Buggy — most "wow per minute". The El Eden canyon ride is the iconic PV experience and fits perfectly in 4 hours.
- Snorkel at Los Arcos — calm bay, easy swim, great for first-timers and families.
- Canopy / zipline — the longest line in Mexico. Adrenaline, mountain views, lunch included.
- Whale watching (Dec–Mar only) — non-negotiable if you're here in season.
1:30pm — Lunch with feet in the sand
Most morning tours drop you in Old Town or at the marina by 1pm. Walk five minutes to Playa Los Muertos, grab a beach club table, order ceviche or a shrimp aguachile, drink the cold beer you've earned.
2:30pm — One last thing
You've still got two hours. Pick the lightest of:
- Walk the Malecón — sea-front boardwalk, sand sculptures, the famous bronze sculptures, free.
- Tequila tasting — many shops on the Malecón offer free or $5 tastings, no pressure to buy.
- Souvenir round — Mercado Municipal at the river is the best prices in town.
3:30pm — Back to the ship
Walk it back unless your knees say no. Cabs from Old Town to terminal: ~$8 USD. Don't let the driver tell you it's $20 — agree on the price before getting in.
What we'd skip
- Anything 5+ hours away — Sayulita, San Sebastián. Beautiful, but you'll be stressed about timing.
- Booking from the ship's desk — same tours, 30–50% more.
- Restaurants on the Malecón at lunch — tourist-priced. The good places are one block back.
