Can I scuba dive in Puerto Vallarta without a certification?
Yes. The Discover Scuba experience includes a pool or shallow-water briefing with a PADI instructor and then a guided dive at Los Arcos to about 12 m (40 ft). No certification is needed, only reasonable health and a minimum age of 10. If you love it, the day can count toward an Open Water course.
What are the best dive sites in Puerto Vallarta?
Los Arcos marine park (walls, tunnels, huge schools of fish, 15 minutes from town), the Marietas Islands (caves, arches, manta and eagle rays, about an hour away by boat) and El Morro and Chimo for advanced divers. Visibility is best from roughly November to May, when the water is cooler and clearer.
What is the water temperature for diving in Puerto Vallarta?
Between about 24 °C (75 °F) in winter and 30 °C (86 °F) in late summer. A 3 mm shorty is enough most of the year; dive shops provide full wetsuits in January and February. Winter dives at Los Arcos often come with humpback whale song in the background.
