SOUTH SIDE SURF
The further south on the bay you go, the better your surfing
skills should be. Only for experienced surfers, riding the
waves on the South side of the bay is done mostly in beaches
that aren't even open to the general public.
Pack your board (or let us take care of that for you), head
out early and decide with your crew where to go, putting
into consideration your skill level, the kind of surfing you
like and the water conditions that day. This is going to be
an all-day affair so be prepared, but don't worry, your last
stop will be at a local botanero for a couple of beers to
toast to an awesome day.
A few of the surfing spots on the south:
La Cruz de Loreto: An hour and
15 minutes south of town, La Cruz de Loreto has a great
beach break good for both surfing and bodyboarding, with
swells from the south, west and north all year round.
La Gloria: With waves from 2-10
feet all year round, and swells from the south, west and
north, La Gloria has a nice river-mouth beach break. It is
located 1.5 hours from Puerto Vallarta.
La Peñita: 2 hours south of
Puerto Vallarta, there are 5 different spots that you can
choose from. It has 2 beach breaks that break on swell
direction from the south, west and north all year round, and
the main break is a left point-break about 250 yards long
(left), with a strong south swell. There are also 2
right-hand breaks that have a fast tube section (July to
September), recommended only for skilled surfers.
