ABOUT THE PESO
We're all about saving you money. The more you save, the
more you have left to buy more $2.00 t-shirts or $5,000
paintings! Take a moment please, to figure out the money.
Little shiny coins are usually not appropriate tips when your
bill in a restaurant comes to you in the hundreds. (ten US
dollars is very roughly 100 pesos, so don't panic y'all.) U.S.
or Canadian coins also do not work here, so please don't
hand them out as tips either. There are a few places that
change them now, but not at full value. Save them for your
parking meters at home.
There will shortly be a 1000 peso note.
Also, there is a 50 peso coin that is
very similar to the large 10 and 20.
When in doubt, read the numbers!
A BUNCH OF TIPS ALL TOGETHER
1) You will not get the best exchange rate for your money in your hotel.
2) You will not get the best exchange rate for your money from Friday afternoon until
Monday morning in the money exchange houses either, so try to change before & after.
3) The VERY BEST exchange rate is the one your credit card company will give you if you
use your card for any major purchases. It is calculated at the rate of exchange on the
day that you make the transaction.
4) For merchants to provide a credit card service here, they must buy a special
telephone line, a special credit card machine, & pay an exorbitant amount of money for
the service, hence, a lot of restaurants & stores do not offer the service.
5) All the banks do NOT give the same exchange rate!
6) All of the 'CASA de Cambios' (commercial money-exchange places, usually just little
vented windows in doorways) do not give the same exchange rate. The Malecon & the
hotel strip give the least, a street up from the Malecon & Old Town money exchanges
appear to give the best.
7 )The banks give you a better rate of exchange than the money exchanges, but often it's
not worth your time to line up & wait for one or two cents on the dollar.
8) Most banks will not change dollars after a certain time in the afternoon, & of course, it
varies. Ask someone before you line up for an hour & find out at the end!
9) We don't tip taxi drivers for simple door to door service, but we tip bakery employees,
copy store staff, the gas station attendant.. You'll see a little jar with the word 'propina'
on it. One peso is usually enough for the tip jars. We often give the bus driver back the
ticket he gives us so that he can resell it (shhhhh, it's a secret), & share a conspiratorial
smile as we step off the bus.
10) Please don't give our children money or candy. We don't go to your hometown & give
things to your children. We do have some needy children but they need school supplies
& other things. If you wish to help, contact us & we'll put you in touch with a worthy
group that funnels your support to the appropriate people.
11) Best exchange rates at the moment, the bank window just on your left in the airport,
when you exit the arrivals lounge. About the same is Sams, & Walmart, but they will not
change 100 dollar bills.
This is a currency conversion chart
that will give you a fairly accurate daily
conversion rate. (I'm hedging here
because we aren't responsible if it isn't
100% accurate!) Click on your back
